Princeton University Preparatory Program Art Workshop
In Summer of 2023, as part of my Teaching Assistant employment with the Princeton University Preparatory Program, I led a workshop in art class on Fashion and Identity. Guided by Raul de Nieves as an artist study and the camp art form at-large, we communally designed and created a maximalist garment. A main guiding point for the piece was the visual motif of the butterfly. The butterfly motif is a vital image for this, as it pertains to the theme of migration and immigration, becoming a beacon of hope as many lives move into the country. It is the collective expanding of identities. The themes of identity, community, immigration, and family were essential in the construction and design of this sculptural garment. Together, as cohorts, and a community, we created identity patches - made of denim - to decorate the sculpture, along with various materials that embellish the sculpture. Ultimately, this garment is an intertwining adventure and journey into the lives and identities of various scholars, through the unique upcycled denim patches, coming to form a whole butterfly. This project became a moment of connection with new artists, such as Raul de Nieves, and the mixed media artistry found in maximalism.
